How Are Duties & Taxes Calculated?

Duty (or customs tariffs) is set by the destination country customs authorities & is determined based on a combination of the country of origin or manufacturing of the merchandise purchased, the classification of the merchandise in accordance with a harmonized system adopted & used by the countries Borderfree supports, and the Value Added Tax (VAT) rates set by the destination country.

Borderfree allows you to select different shipping option that let you pay your duties and taxes when you want to pay them. There are two options when choosing your shipping method:

  • FEES PAID: When 'FEES PAID' is selected, the duties and taxes will be charged at the same time as the purchase of the order. These fees will be shown as 'International Fees' at the bottom of the checkout.
  • FEES UNPAID: The option for FEES UNPAID will be a cheaper shipping option, however the duties and taxes for the items will be charged by the carrier at the time of delivery. The duties and taxes will still be shown as 'International Fees' at the bottom of the checkout, but WILL NOT be charged when the order is placed.
